Palestinian TV Employees Say Hamas Attacked Their Office
Employees of Palestinian Television say Hamas gunmen attacked their Gaza
office today (Monday).
The employees say the gunmen destroyed equipment and accused the network
of favoring the rival Fatah faction of Palestinian Authority President
Mahmoud Abbas. A Hamas spokesman denied involvement.
Hours earlier in Gaza, Palestinian government workers mobbed banks to
demand back-pay promised by the government. There were no immediate
reports of injury.
The incidents are the latest as tensions rise in the Palestinian
territories over factional fighting and the Hamas-led government's
failure to pay civil servants since February. On Saturday, the
government said it would pay one-fourth, or 40-thousand, of its employees.

Former Peruvian President Alan Garcia has won his country's presidential
runoff election over his nationalist rival, former army officer Ollanta
Humala.
With more than three-quarters of the ballots counted, Mr. Garcia leads
with 55 percent of the vote.
Before the first official results were announced, Mr. Garcia made a
triumphant address Sunday to his supporters outside his campaign
headquarters in Lima.
He said Peruvians had defeated the ambitions of Venezuelan President
Hugo Chavez, who strongly endorsed Mr. Humala.
Mr. Garcia accused the Venezuelan leader of trying to spread what he
called a "militaristic and retrograde" style of government throughout
Latin America, and said Peruvians wanted no part of it.
Mr. Humala has not conceded defeat, and his campaign team says he will
wait for the official results of the vote. |
