China's Hu Holding Talks with President Bush
President Bush and Chinese President Hu Jintao are holding talks at
the White House today (Thursday) on issues expected to include trade
and human rights. Mr. Bush and First Lady Laura Bush are now welcoming
the Chinese president and his wife, Liu Yongqing, in a ceremony on
the South Lawn of the White House that includes a 21-gun salute.
Several hundred people have gathered on the streets near the White
House, most protesting the visit and China's human rights record,
but some in the crowd waved banners in support of Mr. Hu. One woman
inside the White House grounds shouted out over Mr. Hu's remarks.
She was escorted away by security.
In opening remarks, Mr. Bush said China has become strong through
the freedom to buy and sell, and will become stronger if it allows
freedom of speech and religion. Mr. Hu and Mr. Bush are also expected
to discuss the controversial nuclear programs of North Korea and Iran.

Nepalese Troops Fire on Protesters; Three Killed
Security forces in Nepal have fatally shot at least three more
anti-monarchy protesters, as tens of thousands of people gathered on
the edge of the curfew zone around the capital, Kathmandu. The killings
came as India's special envoy, former cabinet minister Karan Singh,
ended his talks with both sides in Kathmandu. As he returned to New
Delhi, he said he is hopeful King Gyanendra will soon make an
announcement that will help defuse the situation and the political
stalemate. He did not give any details.
The three protesters killed today (Thursday) bring to 13 the number
of people killed during 15 straight days of protest rallies, called
to denounce the king's seizure of absolute power last year. |
