Eight Dead in Suicide Bombing Attack in Tel Aviv
Israeli police say at least eight people have been killed and dozens
wounded by a Palestinian suicide bomber in downtown Tel Aviv Monday. The
blast occurred at a fast food stand near the city's old central bus
station -- which was also the target of a bombing in January.
After the blast, television stations broadcast a video of a militant
from the West Bank city of Jenin who said he carried out the bombing.
Palestinian witnesses said Israeli forces were sealing off the Jenin
area. A spokesman for the Palestinian militant group Hamas, which now
controls the Palestinian government, defended the bombing as a
legitimate response to Israeli aggression.
Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas condemned the attack and
called on the international community to help end what he called a grave
deterioration in the region. The U.S. government called the attack "a
despicable act for which there is no excuse."
World Oil Prices Soar Above 70 Dollars A Barrel
World oil prices rose sharply Monday on concerns about reduction of the
supply of crude oil in the key U.S. market, and worries that political
problems may crimp supplies from Iran and other oil producers. Prices
for London's benchmark Brent crude hit a record 71 dollars, 40
cents-a-barrel before easing slightly. Prices of U.S. crude for future
delivery briefly touched 70 dollars a barrel in Asian trading.
Iran is in a stand-off with the United States and other nations over a
nuclear program that Teheran says will be used to produce electricity,
but that other nations fear could be used to build nuclear bombs. Iran
is the world's fourth-largest oil producer and investors worry the
dispute might lead Tehran to cut exports at a time when there is little
spare capacity among other oil producers. |
