President Bush Wants to Settle Iran Dispute Diplomatically
The Bush administration says it wants to settle the Iranian nuclear
crisis through diplomacy, although President Bush has not ruled out a
military option.
White House spokesman Scott McClellan says President Bush is not taking
any options off the table, but he said two recent media reports on plans
for air strikes in Iran were based on what he called "wild speculation"
by outside experts.
Iranian President Mamoud Ahmadinejad urged Iranians not to be afraid and
accused the United States of waging "psychologicial warfare" that
included the reports in the New Yorker magazine and the Washington Post
newspaper.
Washington accuses Iran of using its nuclear program as a cover for
developing an atomic bomb -- a charge Tehran denies. The Washington Post
Sunday quoted current and former U.S. defense officials as saying a
Pentagon study of military options is part of a coercive diplomacy to
get Iran to end its nuclear fuel program. The report also says no U.S.
attack appears likely in the short term.
In a separate report citing unnamed sources, The New Yorker magazine
says the Bush administration has increased clandestine activities inside
Iran as well as planning for possible air strikes on nuclear facilities.
The head of the International Atomic Energy Agency (I.A.E.A.), Mohamed
ElBaradei, is due in Iran this week to discuss cooperation with his
agency. I.A.E.A. inspectors arrived in Iran Friday and have visited
Tehran's uranium conversion facility in Isfahan. A visit to the uranium
enrichment facility in Natanz is also on the agenda.
The U.N. body is expected to provide a report to the U.N. Security
Council by the end of this month on Iran's nuclear compliance. Late last
month, the Council ordered Tehran to stop uranium enrichment.
US Immigration Protest
Protesters have begun new marches in the United States to demand greater
rights for more than 11 million illegal immigrants. Demonstrators
wearing white t-shirts and waving American flags paraded today (Monday)
in Atlanta as part of the National Day of Action for Immigration
Justice. Marches also were planned in Washington, D.C. and more than 100
other cities.
Some 350-thousand people demonstrated in (the southern city of) Dallas
on Sunday, and protests were held in several other cities.
The marches are the latest in a series of protests against a House of
Representatives proposal that would classify illegal immigrants as
felons. The House bill also would tighten border security and impose
heavy fines on companies that employ illegal immigrants. Critics say
the proposal is unfairly aimed at mostly Hispanic immigrants who enter
the country to find jobs. |
