Rice Urges China to be More Transparent about Military Buildup
U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice is urging China to be more
transparent about its military development and to accept the responsibilities that
come with its increasing global influence.
Rice was speaking at a news conference in Sydney today (Thursday) after
meeting with Australian Foreign Minister Alexander Downer.
She said the United States wants to know what the growth of China's
military means. China says it spends around 30 billion dollars a year on defense.
The Pentagon, however, estimates that China's military budget may be as
much as three times that amount.
Rice said that China should ensure that its role in international
politics and economics develops in a positive way.
Downer also commented on China-U.S. relations, saying Australia has
never been concerned that Washington is pursuing a policy of containment
toward Beijing.
Rice is scheduled to hold three days of talks on global and regional
security issues, with China's economic rise high on the agenda.
She is also scheduled to meet with Japan's foreign minister later this
week.
Russia, China Call for Resumption of North Korean Nuclear Talks
China and Russia are urging the United States and North Korea to resolve
a financial sanctions dispute in order to resume six-party talks on
North Korea's nuclear program.
China's assistant foreign minister, Li Hui, and Russia's ambassador to
China, Sergei Razov, made the request today (Thursday) during a news
conference in Beijing.
The six-party talks have been stalled since November over North Korea's
demand that the United States lift economic sanctions against Pyongyang.
Washington has rejected that demand.
In a separate issue, Razov said that during Russian President Vladimir
Putin's visit to China next week, his meetings are to include discussion of a
planned oil pipeline that would stretch from Siberia to the Pacific
coast.
China is vying for priority access to the pipeline. |
