Iran Still Opposing Long Moratorium on Uranium Enrichment
A diplomat at the U.N. atomic agency's talks on Iran's nuclear program
says
the Tehran government has made it clear it will not agree to a
compromise
that includes a long-term moratorium on uranium enrichment. The board of
the International Atomic Energy Agency is meeting in Vienna again
Tuesday
to discuss Iran's nuclear program and whether to seek sanctions from the
U.N. Security Council.
Iran has said it intends to go forward with nuclear research and uranium
enrichment for a civilian energy program. The United States and European
countries say Iran may be trying to develop nuclear weapons.
I.A.E.A. chief Mohamed ElBaradei has expressed optimism the dispute
could
be resolved soon. There have been reports that Russia is proposing a
compromise
that would have Iran suspend uranium enrichment activities but allow
Tehran
to continue with limited nuclear research.

Tensions Over Iran Expected in US-Russia Meeting
Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov Tuesday meets with President Bush
and Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice, as the two nations face
differences
over critical foreign policy issues like Iran's nuclear program and the
Palestinian militant group, Hamas. Russia has not indicated if it will
support the United States and other European countries in the continuing
debate over Iran's nuclear program.
Officials in Washington also have expressed concern about the recent
visit
of Hamas officials to Moscow. The militant group that gained power in
Palestinian
elections has not renounced violence nor has it recognized Israel. The
United States and its European allies have tried to convince Hamas that
the Palestinian government faces international isolation and a
withholding
of funds unless it reverses those policies.

Iraqi Security Forces Accused of Torturing Prisoners
The human-rights group Amnesty International says Iraqi security force
s operating alongside the U.S.-led multinational forces are torturing
prisoners in Iraq. The London-based rights group says in a report Mond
ay that human-rights situation in Iraq is dire. Prisoners in facilitie

ve died.
The report says thousands of Iraqi detainees classified by the multina
